Beginners get ringing
Youngsters in Stone managed to find something different to occupy them over the half term holidays when they got stuck into a bell ringing course for beginners.
The Let’s Ring! course was run at All Saints Chuch by Jeremy Sargent and Catherine White-Horne who were hoping the event would help address the chronic shortage of bell ringers in the area.
Catherine and her boys, Ben and Alistair, had started ringing on Sundays at St Mary’s church in Thornbury. Catherine had begun to recruit young friends and neighbours from the area and the idea for Let’s Ring! was to bolster bell ringing numbers.
Catherine said: “By the end of the week, all our students, including those who had never touched a bell-rope before, were able to handle a church bell on their own. Most were confident enough to join in ringing with a band of experienced ringers, under careful supervision.”
The organisers hope to build on the success with extra evening practices at Stone and Thornbury dedicated to our beginners.
