Seniors run for Thornbury in the Severn Bridge Half Marathon and 10k

THE topic of the British weather dominates many conversations, even in the sporting world.

So a dry and very hot August Bank Holiday weekend was mentioned many times by those of Thornbury Running Club setting out to complete an event – and may even have been used as an excuse for a not-as-good-as-hoped-for performance.

On the Saturday the Thornbury parkrun was cancelled at the Mundy Playing fields, so several runners travelled to Severn Bridge, where there were two new course PBs and five Thornbury first-timers taking part. It was the run's first birthday and a Hawaiian beach party theme dress was encouraged, with donations requested for the Severn Area Rescue Association.

Adam Frontczak was first club member back in 10.58 minutes, followed by Kevin Wood, 22.20. First of the Personal Bests was Chris Lee, 25.48. Rebecca Twyman ran a PB of 31.01 minutes in her beach pyjamas.

On the Sunday Chepstow and the Severn Bridge were again the place to be as the sixth running of the Severn Bridge Half Marathon and 10k race took place, with the bridge closed to traffic to allow runners to race on the main carriageway.

A contingent of seniors represented Thornbury.

In a half-marathon field of 1,335 Steve Dimond had a great run to finish second in the MV65 category in 1hr 54.58min and 366th place overall.

Mike Bennewitz had recovered from the Dublin half-marathon a fortnight before to run 2h 2.16m, 5th MV65 and 527th overall, with Chris Foley's 2h 14.5m securing 9th in MV65 and 758th overall. David Flemington ran in the MV60 category in 2h 33.12m.

The 10k option had 1,086 finishers. Judy Mills, having downgraded from the half-marathon due to injury and associated lack of training, finished 2nd in the FV60 category in 1h 0m 24s, in 315th place.

Richard Illingworth raced his first 10k for several years and was 3rd in the MV70 class and 518th overall, in 1h 7.21m.
