A NEW social group is about to start in Thornbury for people with learning disabilities.

Inspiration for the group has come from a young woman called Danielle, who lives in the town and wants to meet up with other people with learning difficulties for events and activities.

Through the South Gloucestershire project Curo Community Connectors, which helps to bring people together in order to meet local needs, the first meeting of the group has been planned.

It will start at 2pm on Friday, May 4, in the Hawkes House, St Mary Street.

Potential activities for the group could include walks, barbecues, creative writing sessions and craftwork.

Anyone interested in joining is welcome to go along to the first meeting.

Volunteers are also needed to help with the organising and running of the group and they should contact co-ordinator Sandy Corke on 07422 078549 for more details.

In the past 18 months more than 40 new groups have been started by Curo Community Connectors before becoming self-managing.

  1. Anyone considering launching one should phone Hilary Jay on 07792 495367. Start-up grants of £200 may be available.
