A NEW interim headteacher will join the Castle School in September after it was announced that Peter Smart will continue on secondment at Winterbourne International Academy.

Mr Smart switched from leading the Thornbury school to become interim principal at the troubled academy at the start of this year.

As a result of a request from Winterbourne, that arrangement has now been extended to cover the next academic year.

William Roberts, chief executive of the Castle School Education Trust (CSET), stepped in to cover for Mr Smart during his absence.

But it has now been announced that Angie Browne will become interim head for the 2017-18 school year.

Mr Roberts said: “Ms Browne will work with our school leadership team over the coming weeks to plan for the new academic year and will attend events in order to meet parents both before and after the summer holiday.”

In a message to pupils, staff and parents, Ms Browne said: “Having worked as an English teacher and then head of English in a central Bristol school and rural Wiltshire school respectively, I returned to Bristol where I worked as a senior leader for five years.

“I moved on to take up the post of executive deputy headteacher of a special school federation in South Gloucestershire, where I was then promoted to headteacher of the ‘education other than at school service’.

“In 2013 I was appointed as founding principal of Steiner Academy Bristol and established the fourth 4th Steiner free school in the UK.

“Having led the school through its formative stages, I am now delighted to be returning to South Gloucestershire and thrilled to be joining the staff and school community at the Castle School.”

CSET and the Olympus Academy Trust are jointly providing interim leadership at Winterbourne to help get the academy out of special measures. They had already proposed taking over sponsorship of the school and hope that will eventually happen.
