Choral society commemorates two centenaries
Thornbury Choral Society has chosen the end of the First World War and the birth of Women’s Suffrage to be commemorated at its autumn concert.
The programme features Sir Edward Elgar’s piece ‘The Spirit of England’, which sets three poems to his music from Laurence Binyon’s ‘The Winnowing Fan’, which are about aspects of WW1. The first poem reflects the initial euphoria at the start of the war in 1914, the second celebrates the sacrifice made by women, and the third reflects on those who lost their lives.
Two other works by Elgar, Polonia, and The Music Makers, will also be performed. The soloists will be Isabelle Peters (soprano) and Olivia Gomaz (alto). The conductor is Steven Kings. The Thornbury Camerata will perform ‘Polonia’ and provide the instrumental accompaniment to the other works.
The concert takes place at the Castle School on Saturday 1 December at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from choir members, or from Tessa Sullivan via 01454 417865, or email email@example.com with a £1 discount if bought in advance. They will also be on sale just before the concert from Thornbury Town Hall.
