THORNBURY priest the Rev Tom Keates will step out to help raise money for the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust.

As previously reported in Thornbury Voice, the annual Ride and Stride day on Saturday, September 9, is organised to bring in cash that can be given in grants to churches in need of repairs or improvements.

The churches to benefit can be of any Christian denomination across South Gloucestershire, north Bristol and Gloucestershire.

Those taking part in the event will be sponsored to ride, walk or drive between their local churches, with the money raised to be divided between the trust and the participants’ nominated churches.

The Rev Keates, associate priest in Thornbury, will set off with other walkers from St Mary’s in Shepperdine at 10am to walk along the banks of the River Severn to St Arilda’s in Oldbury-on-Severn for a picnic lunch.

He will then head across fields for St Mary’s in Thornbury and finally on to St Paul’s at The Hackett.

Prayers will be said in each church, starting with a simple morning prayer in Shepperdine and ending with evening prayers at St Paul’s.

Last year, Rev Keates and his fellow walkers raised more than £600 and this year hope to collect even more.

Anyone who wants to join the group for all or part of the walk is welcome to do so.
