Rapist and kidnapper goes on the run after absconding from Leyhill Open Prison
POLICE are trying to trace a prisoner serving a sentence for rape and kidnap who has absconded from Leyhill Open Prison.
Sean Phipps, who is 51, was last seen in Bristol city centre, where he was on day release, on June 1.
He failed to return to Leyhill at the end of the day.
Police say they are "keeping an open mind" as to where he has gone, as he has links to the Leicester and Leeds areas.
Phipps, who has also previously used the surnames Cawthray, Goldthorpe and Perry, was imprisoned after being convicted of kidnap and rape in 2002.
Police are calling on people to call 999 if they see Phipps, who is white and about 6ft 2in tall.
When he went to Bristol he was wearing a black coat over a blue top, blue jeans and Timberland footwear.
He also wore a black Casio watch, blue glasses, and carried a vape pen with him.
Detective Inspector Dan Rowan said: “Sean Phipps travelled to Bristol city centre on Wednesday but failed to return to HMP Leyhill as required.
“At this time we are keeping an open mind as to where he is, but believe he could have travelled outside the force area. He’s known to have links with the Leicester and Leeds areas."
Police say anyone who sees Phipps should not approach him but should instead call 999 and give the reference number 5222 130 002.
Anyone with information about where he has gone should call 101 and use the same reference number.
