Rockhampton Cricket Club busy in the off season

We may be heading towards Christmas, but members at Rockhampton have been busy preparing for the future, and even playing some cricket, as chairman John Hore explains.

September signals the end of cricket “out in the middle”, the autumn renovations are completed and most clubs close down for winter telling themselves that the new season is only 6 months away. At Rockhampton Cricket Club this could not be further from the truth.

The additional land purchased 2 years ago, some two and half acres, has been drained, levelled and seeded and I am relieved to report that the germination has been fantastic resulting in a green carpet of new grass which will be ready for playing on next season.  Being able to extend the boundaries will mean that the new square, which was prepared by Gloucestershire County Cricket Club 12 months ago, will be in use from May 2019.  The extended playing area will also allow all the junior teams to have next summer’s Friday night practices all at the Boundary Field rather than being split between the Common and Boundary Field. The parents can look forward to having drinks and BBQ all at the same venue.

In addition to the ground works mentioned we were lucky to obtain funding which has enabled the club to renovate a large pond which sits in the far corner of the ground, with its very own island graded to encourage wildlife. This should become a tremendous feature for all to enjoy.

With regards winter cricket, the Junior Section (U9’s / U12’s) have indoor practice Monday, Tuesday and Fridays at Castle School leading up to Christmas and again in the New Year . Meanwhile the U12s are having a great time playing in the indoor Damien Forder Cricket league at the County Ground, following a very successful season when they won the U11’s Stroud District Development League .

Senior Nets will take place from February at the Castle School, dates and times to be announced.
