THORNBURY’S sea cadets need to replace their 25-year-old minibus so they can continue to go on camps, courses and competitions.

Their current vehicle is invaluable to the unit, based just off Gloucester Road, but has been described as “ailing” and in need of replacement.

Cadet leaders are now asking shoppers who use one of the town’s supermarkets to consider supporting the unit through a token scheme.

The Tesco store gives tokens to shoppers at the checkout, which customers can drop into one of several collection boxes for the local community project of their choice.

Grants of different amounts, from £1,000 to £4,000, are then given to the projects depending on the number of tokens they receive.

Meanwhile, anyone between ten and 18 who is interested in joining the sea cadets should email thornburyscc@gmail.com or call 01454 411105. The unit meets on two evenings a week.
