Thornbury tennis club has started the area’s late summer league buoyed by two promotions in the LTA Avon summer league.

The club entered 9 teams of 4 players - five mens’ and four ladies.  There were six teams in each league with each team playing each other both home and away.  Each match comprised 4 individual matches - all doubles.  The top teams contained some county level players and the lower teams included developing players gaining valuable experience of league tennis, with abilities of all levels in between. This allowed players of all standards to enjoy some competitive tennis, with 60 players involved.

The ladies’ second team of Rae Bezuidenhout, Carole Boulton, Linda Mantle and Claire Hawkins secured second place in their division, gaining promotion for next year.  They were given great support by Sarah Hurley, Gill Hardy, Mary Bhatti and juniors Brooke Daunton and Suzanna Ogden.  The ladies’ first, third and fourth teams all performed well, finishing in mid-table.

The five men’s teams competed in divisions 2 to 9, and had a tough time. The first team were affected by some key absences, meaning that some players were playing at a level higher than they’re used to.

The juniors were paired with experienced players to help balance experience levels and provide them with support.  Fortunately, the men’s second team put in a strong performance and finished second in their division, gaining promotion.

The experienced pair of Malcolm Worster and Mike Peatheyjohns, along with the Junior/Senior combination of Luke Johnson and Wayne Russell were those celebrating.  The men’s third team finished mid-table.

The Annual Club Tournament is now the focus at the club. This is a knockout competition with categories for Men’s & Ladies Singles, Men’s & ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles.  The preliminaries were in September with all the finals taking place on 14 October.

Contrary to popular belief, tennis is played throughout the year.  The LTA Avon Summer League programme has just finished and the Late Summer League programme has started.  Thornbury has 3 teams of four players competing in this league which requires a mixed doubles format.  Once this completes, the winter league season starts with Thornbury fielding a further 3 teams of four.  The format of the winter league is a combination of mixed and mens’/ladies doubles. The weather at times can be challenging, but the matches always get played – sometimes a little later than planned.
