Thornbury crowned Champion of Champions in Britain In Bloom South West competition
THORNBURY is celebrating being crowned the Britain In Bloom South West Champion of Champions.
The town entered the top class of the Britain In Bloom South West competition, the Champion of Champions class, this year, competing against the winners of every category from last year's event.
Every entry achieved a gold medal - but Thornbury topped the lot to win the Champion of Champions trophy.
Five members of the Thornbury in Bloom organising team, town mayor Angela Symonds and four members of South Gloucestershire Council grounds staff travelled to Newquay for the award ceremony.
Sue Aitken of Thornbury in Bloom said: "The success reflects the huge level of community involvement that goes into creating our entry. From Brownies and Cubs, through schools, allotments, church yards, private residents, businesses to retirement homes, every part of our town is represented.
"So thanks go to everyone who has been involved in any way.
"The award is for the whole town and should be a great cause for celebration. We can all say we live in a Britain In Bloom top award winning town."
A total of 12 community groups from the town won 'outstanding' ratings in the contest's It's Your Neighbourhood awards, while three others received 'thriving' ratings.
Sue said the successful Thornbury In Bloom team now needs new volunteers to continue its success, as some members of the organising team are having to give up some of their duties.
Physical workers, fundraisers, a schools coordinator and leaflet deliverers are among the volunteers needed.
Anyone who is interested can contact one of the current team, pop into Thornbury Garden Shop and speak to Sue, email firstname.lastname@example.org, message the team through its Facebook page or come along to the AGM at The Swan on November 25 at 7.30pm.
