THE Castle School was forced to close for a day after vandals daubed offensive graffiti across the main campus in Park Road.

Interim headteacher Angie Browne said disruption caused by the incident included having to re-schedule exams that some pupils should have taken.

But she thanked everyone who had given “unwavering and continued support” to the school.

The graffiti and vandalism were discovered on Monday, January 15, when the site team began unlocking the school at the start of the day.

Ms Browne said contractors had to be called in to remove the graffiti and repair damage to roofs and other areas, meaning the school could not operate safely with students on site.

She said parents had offered to help with the clean-up and staff began work on the task as soon as possible.

She said: “I can confirm that the vandals failed to gain access to the buildings and that thankfully the damage was confined to outside spaces and the front and rear elevations of the school.

“The vandalism consisted of large amounts of graffiti at ground floor and upper floor levels across the entire campus. The graffiti was very offensive.”

But she said the efforts of the school team and contractors meant it had all been removed by the end of the day and the school re-opened the following morning with assemblies in every year group.

Ms Browne said: “The staff and I are extremely disappointed that the education of so many children has been disrupted by the thoughtless acts of a small group of individuals.

“The cost of the clean-up and the incalculable cost of teaching and learning missed cannot easily be made up.

“We are doing everything we can to support the police in their investigations.”

An Avon and Somerset Police spokeswoman said officers had received a number of calls about the incident and appealed for anyone with further information to contact them.
