Awards bring tennis players in from the cold

THORNBURY Tennis Club is looking forward to the warmer weather after a chilly American tournament that ended with the club’s annual awards ceremony.

A total of 24 players took part in the tournament and were arranged in mixed doubles pairs. Each pair played three sets, with each set being eight games long.

The winners on the day were Malcolm Worster and Megan O’Connor. Malcolm had a phenomenal result, winning all 32 games played. He humbly credited his success to his playing partners. Megan claimed the ladies title, beating Linda Mantle and Qian Huen by one game.

The end of season awards saw some new faces claiming the award for their hard work and achievements thought out the year.

Nick Mason was awarded the Adult Ambassador’s award. Nick is the Men’s Summer and Late Summer captain of the Avon LTA league. He also started the Tie Break Tens tournament at the club.

The Junior Ambassador award was given to Dan Beddoes. Dan has been a member of the club for many years and has grown into a role model to all his peers.. He has represented the club in both Junior League matches and the Adult leagues, and he is set to compete in this season’s adult summer league.

Freddie Savage was named Men’s Player of the Season. Freddie was a key player in the 2nds team which successfully gained promotion at the end of 2018.

The award for Ladies Player of the Season was jointly presented to Sarah Hurley and Jo Hargreaves. Both were key players in the Ladies first team, which gained promotion at the end of the season. As a playing pair they achieved great success in the Summer league, coming second overall in the whole Avon LTA Summer league.
