Winter tennis league reaching its conclusion

Thornbury Tennis Club is targeting top three finishes as the Avon Winter Tennis League draws to a close.

Thornbury Tennis Club is targeting top three finishes as the Avon Winter Tennis League draws to a close.

The first team is currently third in the league.  They have three remaining matches and a real prospect of overtaking Bath, who are currently second in the league.

The second team is currently second in their league with one match to play.  They are likely to stay in second place and just miss out on promotion.

The Club uses the third team matches for players to gain experience of league tennis.  They currently lie in sixth place with two matches to play. Their target is to climb to fifth place.

Club ready for summer league

The Avon Summer Tennis Leagues are the highlight of the Club’s year.  This year the Club has entered 5 mens teams and four ladies teams.

Each of the Club’s teams will be placed in a league of 6 teams. They will play a total of 10 matches (5 at home and 5 away).  Each team comprises two pairs who play singles matches on a Friday evening.  All matches are best of 3 sets, with tie breaks – so pairs may have to play 6 sets of tennis during the evening.

The league season starts Friday 11 May and runs through to 20 July.

Summer League practice sessions will start on Monday 9 April, with the club holding a pre-season social to celebrate the season’s arrival.

Annual General Meeting

The Club’s Annual General Meeting saw members briefed on ambitious plans to improve facilities and secure the long term future of the club.  The club’s current President, John Harbottle, was re-elected and three new committee members including a new Membership Secretary, Fiona Wilkinson, were elected.

Forthcoming Tournaments

The first two competitions of the new tennis season will be American Tournaments where players change partners for each round of the mixed doubles competition.

The  President’s Plate Mixed Doubles Tournament is also held in April.  For the last three years this has been won by Megan O’Connor and Brendan Wilde.   A different result is guaranteed as Megan will be on holiday during this year’s tournament.
