YouthFest will highlight the best of Thornbury's young people

AN all-day event will aim to highlight the positive attributes that young people have and what they can offer their community.

YouthFest 2019 will take place at Thornbury’s Skatepark on September 28.

In previous years a skate competition has been held, but this time the event will be bigger, with a wider variety of activities, including archery, an inflatable obstacle course, DJ workshops, street dance performances, graffiti workshops and a well-being tent.

The skate competition is open to over-10s who love scooting, skateboarding or BMX biking.

YouthFest is organised by Krunch South West, a charity which runs youth clubs and programmes to support young people and has been working with Thornbury StreetSpace and Thornbury Baptist Church to raise money to create a youth hub in two shipping containers opposite the skatepark. They have £10,000 left to raise but hope that some services will be in place in time for YouthFest.

Penny Baker, from Krunch, said: “I think it’s so important that young people can feel part of the community – that’s where we’ve had some disengagement with young people – we hear a lot about the negative behaviour around young people and this is about celebrating the positive side of youth. It’s also about young people seeing organisations working in partnership for them.”

YouthFest widens the appeal of previous skate and BMX-centred events at the skatepark, above, to include archery, obstalce courses and street dance

The YouthFest event takes place from midday to 4pm at Thornbury Skatepark, by the leisure centre. Entry is free, although donations will be requested for the activities to help raise funds for the youth hub.

Volunteers are needed on the day to help with signing in, stewarding, supervision, and serving refreshments: any age welcome.

Anyone who can help should email or, or call 01454 413392.
