A DRIVER who crashed on the Almondsbury interchange and was then hit by two other vehicles after getting out of his car has been arrested.
Avon & Somerset police said the driver and his passenger were both taken to hospital after the incident, which happened last night shortly after 9pm.
The driver was still in hospital this afternoon, under “police supervision”.
The southbound M5, westbound M4 and slip roads on the interchange between the two motorways were closed for more than an hour after the collision
A police spokesperson said: “The initial report was of a car which had collided with the central reservation of the carriageway.
“The driver of the car then got out of his vehicle and was involved in a further collision involving two other vehicles travelling on the M4 carriageway.
“The driver and passenger of the initial vehicle were taken to hospital, where the passenger has since been discharged.
‘Life-changing’ injuries
“The driver, who has been arrested and remains under police supervision in hospital, is not thought to have life-threatening injuries but they are potentially life changing.
“The drivers of the other cars involved are aiding us with our enquiries and are being treated as witnesses.”
Both the westbound M4 and southbound M5 were closed on the approach to the interchange while police, ambulance and the fire service attended the incident.
Traffic heading from the northbound M5 onto the M4 was also held.
The roads reopened at around 10.30pm.
