South Glos man charged with violent disorder in protest investigation

A CHARFIELD man has been charged with violent disorder in connection with protests in Bristol.

Benjamin Tavener, aged 35, is due to appear at Bristol Magistrates’ Court today.

It follows a police investigation into violence in the city centre over several hours on August 3, firstly in Castle Park and then outside a hotel that houses asylum seekers on Redcliff Hill.

Hundreds of anti-immigration protesters were on the streets of the city, faced by anti-racism counter protesters.

Police said they have now arrested a total of 28 people in connection with the disorder, including a 15-year-old boy who was charged with violent disorder and is due to appear in court tomorrow.

Another man in his 30s was also arrested on suspicion of violent disorder yesterday.

One person has been released and will face no further action while enquiries remain ongoing in relation to the others.

Police are asking people to help identify several suspects in their investigation – images can be found here.

Anyone who recognises any of those pictured is asked to complete an online form.
